Chief Commissioner's Blog| What makes a great leader?

When we talk about giving, we invariably think about money, but there is much more to the concept of giving when it comes to leadership, as Wayne explores…

Important announcements

Reading an article on LinkedIn entitled ‘Great leaders produce great leaders’ reminded me of a similar quote from Baden-Powell a century ago: ‘the more responsibility the Scout Master gives his patrol leaders the more they respond’. In some ways, so little changes in a century.

So youth-shaped Scouting is nothing new.  The timing of the article was great as we prepare to announce the first UK Youth Commissioner on 21 October and make changes to our youth programme where teamwork and leadership feature significantly. Also, last weekend the Operations Committee signed off proposals for our exciting Future Leaders programme, the very first of its kind in the voluntary sector.

Mentoring and a ‘giving style’

Baden-Powell also reminds us of the role we each play by leading by personal example and mentoring others so that they may achieve their full potential too. A key part of our plans for the UKYC and Future Leaders programme includes a structured approach to mentoring and support. But such personal support is key for all young people; the LinkedIn article concluded by noting that we can best identify future leaders by treating everybody like they have high potential.

Another authority on management, Adam Grant, concluded that leaders with a ‘giving style’ (those who give more to others than they receive) not only are more successful themselves but also produce more future leaders.

The wait is nearly over

For the past couple for weeks we have been supporting the UKYC and two deputies to ensure they are well prepared; having just witnessed a maiden speech, I can very truly say how excited I am for the future of our Movement; especially our commitment to being shaped by young people in partnership with adults.
