Wayne talks about improving on our leadership and management culture…

On Saturday we launched our Super Scouts Leadership Programme, the latest initiative aimed at significantly improving the quality and effectiveness of volunteer and staff leadership within Scouting.

This is the latest stage of an initiative that started in 2008 and has become known as the Leadership and Management Culture Strategy. Much of this can be followed at scouts.org.uk/managers, which includes a wide range of initiatives like effective GSL and DC inductions, streamlining role descriptions, practical leadership tools and much more.

Shaping our leadership culture

We are piloting the first Super Scout Programme with a group of my team and senior staff colleagues through a programme using the following methodologies:

•    360° feedback
•    coaching
•    action Learning
•    residential and workshops
•    specialist projects/open resources

This is the first step in shaping a new leadership culture across our Movement.

Supporting our future leaders

Another element of this programme is the Future Leaders Programme, which I have written about previously and which I’m pleased will hopefully be launched later this year.

A vital element of both schemes and our adult training in general is a need to improve the coaching and mentoring we offer volunteers; I’m delighted with the progress that is being made in this work and which I shared when I joined the project team last month.

I’m often asked what single thing I believe has the potential to greater impact on our ability to offer life-changing opportunities to young people. I continue to believe that our work to improve the leadership and management culture of our Movement will lead to better supported, inspired and motivated leaders, through whom come great programmes and opportunities for young people.

this is an excellent initiative as long as those selected for this programme have the right mind set. I recall as a young officer cadet being introduced to the motto of Sandhurst "serve to lead" which is about service through leadership rather than being self serving. A recent book by Simon Sinek is a great foundation "leaders eat last"
