Chief Commissioner for England, Alex Peace-Gadsby takes us through just some of the highlights of her first six weeks…

Six weeks in

I've always been really proud of our movement and the way we all team together to change so many young people's lives; six weeks into my new role and having met so many brilliant people, that point of view has been completely cemented in my mind. I thought I’d share just a few of the many amazing things I've seen over the past few weeks…

That camping trip was intents!

Okay, so my sense of humour is rubbish but the principle is there. I recently witnessed lifelong memories being created when 6,000 people came together to experience the vibrant energy of West Yorkshire’s BIG camp (where I was thrown off a viaduct – thanks!). I also went with my own Scouts and Explorers (and another 2,500 young people) to Nottinghamshire County’s Big Weekend and joined Boston District for wide games and campfire.

Our outdoor adventures set us apart as a movement and young people have told us that camping is very important to them. Baden-Powell was first to suggest all young people within Scouting should get to experience nights away and that sentiment is just as relevant today. Taking part creates a wonderful camaraderie plus – equally important and memorable – young people get a real benefit and understanding of being part of a wider Scouting family through coming together as a District or County.

Engaging the community

Hitchin District kindly invited me to their fantastic SCOUTitOUT recruitment drive. Working with the local media, running open nights for the week and culminating with campfire and activities on their town square, the District got a massive 54 offers of help, ranging from potential Group Chairs, leaders and Occasional Helpers as well as young people wanting to join the fun. Look at @HitchinScouts on Twitter for ideas and pictures.

Unsung Heroes

So far I’ve met the eight Regional Commissioners for England, 21 of our County Commissioners and some of the team from the Regional Development Service. The magic we get to experience week in, week out at Groups all over the UK is facilitated by this phenomenal support team and structure that helps to make sure young people stay safe and get a consistent quality experience across the country.

Everyone who gives their time to Scouting – whatever their role – is an unsung hero in my mind and there are great opportunities to acknowledge someone who has done something great through the Scouting awards system.
