Chief Commissioner's Blog | Making the most of the unexpected

This week, Wayne addresses two stories in the national press and reports back on a very busy week.

In the news

Two stories in the Sunday Times and Observer [11.10.15] led to a flurry of comments on social media; the appointment of Ann Limb as Chair of our Trustee board and a story on our Scouting in Schools pilots.

Making the point

On the former,  whilst it is true that the headline may be a little misleading, I think this is generally a great article for Scouting, headline aside. Whilst those of us in TSA know that we are welcoming to all and especially co-educational, it never ceases to surprise me how many people (many key influencers included) don't know that.

We therefore need to make the most of key opportunities like Ann's appointment to make this clear. It's worth noting that whilst we have ‘placed’ this interview, we have no control over what the journalist writes, or the choice the editor makes with the headline. That said, in this instance, whilst it’s confusing internally to us, people outside Scouting are likely to be surprised we are appointing a female to such a senior role in our governance. Also, for those that think this is just ‘PC’, Ann is a great ‘coup’ for us and was most certainly appointed for her skill set in open competition with other candidates of which I'm pleased to say there were a large number of excellent people. Nice to know such people want to join us.

Making the most of the unexpected

The Scouting in Schools article arose because a journalist attended our Fringe meeting at one of the party political conferences and was very impressed by what he heard and further in subsequent discussions.  We first covered this topic and I mentioned it in my blog last week.

Such serious coverage of our work is a great step forward.  It’s worth noting, however, that whilst a few people commented that because we are quoted or publicised the article, then we must have approved it. As much as we may wish, we clearly have no control over what is reported or the context in which any quotes are reported.

In other news

The past week continued the current busy pattern: a call with County Commissioners and a chance to catch up with colleagues on Monday, an excellent session with Bear looking at some exciting plans for the next 15 months.  An Operation Committee on Saturday reviewed progress on the strategic plan, operational plans generally and working more smartly, practical support for activities and the programme generally, Network Reboot and much more. Finally, on Sunday, an opportunity to join DC, CC and their Chairs from across the South West of England and be part of their development and support day.
