Chief Commissioner's Blog | Commemorating the past

BLOG 20.05.2016
Wayne spent Saturday in Colchester, Essex, and took advantage of commemorating the past, to reflect on the significance for today.

On this spot in 1886-7…

Unveiling a plaque on Saturday, commemorating the fact that Lord Baden-Powell was stationed at Colchester Garrison in 1886-7, and chatting to members of Essex Jamboree contingent, I reflected that whilst the world is incredibly different 130 years later, the very skills that Baden-Powell was developing and instilling in his soldiers as a Captain in the Hussars and that underpinned the Movement he founded in 1907, are even more relevant today than they were then.

Whilst the world may be very different and Scouting itself evolving, the values and skills learnt that underpin it remain very much the same.

Life after a World Scout Jamboree

It was a good opportunity to catch up with the Explorer Scouts and discuss their reflections on the Jamboree and more importantly what they have done with the skills and experiences learnt.  Most are Young Leaders and all were continuing to share and promote other international opportunities that Scouting offers.

And the unveiling…

After the unveiling with dignitaries from the County, it was great to join Cubs from each of the packs in the two Colchester Districts who were enjoying an activity day.  Thankfully my reef knot skills with the strawberry laces held up better than pioneering with cocktail sticks and gems (ate too many!) and chopsticks and smarties! There was a sweet theme. In all cases, the Cubs were much better!

Threw caution to the wind.

I even manage to walk, talk and avoid lampposts whilst doing a video blog with Peter Lawrence - aka Vlogging For Scouts.

I also had an opportunity to drop in on 1st Mylands Group who were celebrating their 60th anniversary.
