Volunteers' Week

If only I could have £1 for every time I have to explain that I'm a volunteer, doing my Scouting unpaid! The same will apply to countless numbers of leaders, helpers and supporters across the UK.

Whilst it may feel odd to have to explain, it is of course, a great compliment to the dedication and commitment of everybody, front of house or behind the scenes, ensuring that 460,00 young people enjoy Scouting every week so well that people assume we must be paid!

Of course, the rewards, whilst not financial, are great in so many other ways - tangible in terms of enhanced skills which are of benefit in the workplace, and 'soft' in terms of the satisfaction in watching young people develop new skills of their own, having a first adventure or helping a leader learn a new skill or overcome a challenge.

As Volunteers' Week launches, let's promote the positive values of volunteering; it is good for young people, our communities and good for us too.

Finally, a big thank you to everybody who volunteers for UK Scouting and to our families and friends who support us in doing so.
