Thanking those closest to us

After relaxing in Ireland with Julie for a few days drifting along the River Shannon, it was back to London for another varied and action packed 48 hours.

Nearly there…

On Friday evening, the Conference team at Baden-Powell House had transformed the main hall into a fabulous venue for a gathering of Scouting friends and colleagues spanning the 15 years I have been a national volunteer.  As always, such occasions are an emotional rollercoaster of renewing friendships, sharing stories and certainly very humbling. I was especially proud to be joined by my family, Julie, Alastair, Francesca and Em for the evening – as I’ve said on many occasions I, like many of you, would be unable to do my Scouting without their amazing help, support and unbelievable understanding over long periods.  It’s nice to be able to acknowledge this from time to time – and not just at the end!

Saturday saw my 31st, and final, Trustee Board meeting since being elected a trustee in the same hall in September 2001. It was a very full day of Scouting business!  Trustees had a detailed briefing and training session on Safeguarding, approved our annual financial statements and budget update, considered proposals from the Governance Review Group, received a progress report on our strategies and KPIs and of course, said farewell to retiring Trustees.

Interviews

Another reminder of why, if one was needed

I capped a very busy 48 hours by spending Saturday evening with 4,500 very excited (not yet exhausted) Explorer Scouts and their leaders at Gilwell24.  They were nearly halfway through their non-stop 24 hours of fun and adventure.

Talking to them and their leaders, it was easy to see why the introduction of this section has been such a key part of the many changes we have successfully developed and that underpin our Movement’s current success.
