2004: Duncan dares to become Chief Scout

On 5 September 2004 TV adventurer Peter Duncan became the ninth Chief Scout. This was a bold move at the time, as it was the first appointment of a Chief Scout who didn’t come from a military background or significant Scouting experience.

The appointment demonstrated that Scouting was a modern Movement that would appeal to the UK’ 21st century young people. During Peter’s time as Chief Scout our membership has increased every year and continues to do so.

“I can think of no better organisation to provide a creative and challenging framework for the positive development of young men and women."

Peter Duncan
