Taking Christmas to Kenya

23/12/2011

Christmas in Africa has become a reality to 50 Scouts and their leaders from south-east London.

They left their families behind last Sunday to fly off, having raised £20,000 to take Christmas to over one hundred Kenyan orphans. They are currently taking part in a variety of different community and environmental projects before returning on New Year’s Day.

A long, long way together

The expedition participants from Bexley and Bromley have worked together throughout this year to raise the funds for the expedition. This has paid for materials to build a new play area and provide equipment for the local young people who have been orphaned by a combination of HIV/AIDS and the recent humanitarian crisis.

Who's coming to town?

On Christmas Day, they will prepare a special meal for the local children before a surprise visit from Father Christmas, who will hand out presents.

Explorer Scout Rachel, 17, from Bickley said: ‘It's a great opportunity to go to another country and exchange life skills, to leave the Kenyans with resources they need and to have memories of a Christmas both they and us will never forget. It’s an amazing feeling!’

Well Done to everyone from Greater London Scout East involved in this once in a lifetime expedition which will change lives in Kenya for ever.

How selfless to give up their Christmas to improve the lives of others - a proud moment and evidence of the good turn to others in action.

Happy Christmas :)

I bought a trolley token to help these guys fund raise. It's still going strong on my shopping trips.
