Charity Commission clarification - England and Wales only

ScoutingPlus (6 March 2015) included information regarding the Charity Commission and annual returns.  The Charity Commission had advised The Scout Association that there were a number of Scout units (a Scout unit could be a Group, District or County/Area) registered with them who had not yet submitted their annual returns, and who were in default with their reporting requirements.

The article in Scouting Plus may have caused some confusion as it was intended as a reminder to those Scout units already registered with the Charity Commission to submit their Annual Returns and not intended to address any general requirement for units to register.  We apologise for any confusion caused.

To share the Charity Commission’s concerns correctly about annual returns, please can we remind those Scout units already registered with the Charity Commission that:

  • If your income is below £10,000, then you must keep your registered entry up-to-date annually by completing an Annual Return (update form) e.g. income, expenditure, trustees, contact details; and
  • If your income is £10,000 or over, then you must keep your registered entry up-to-date annually by completing an Annual Return and, where required (i.e. income £25,000 or over), also submit a copy of your Accounts and Trustees Annual Report.

Please note, the above is intended to be completed online and when you access your charity details on the Charity Commission website you will be guided through the process provided by them. If you are in any doubt please search the Charity Commission website to check that your Scout unit is up-to-date.

For more information on the requirement to register with the Charity Commission please visit the Charity Commission website and the information on Member Resources.
