Employee volunteering has many benefits

The Scout Association believes that employers should encourage their staff to volunteer so more young people can enjoy exciting outdoor activities through Scouting.

In a recent report to the All Party Commission on Physical Activity, The Scout Association called on the Government to give employers incentives for their staff to volunteer.

Volunteering has clear benefits for businesses. A Study by the Public and Corporate Economic Consultants found business leaders thought employees who were involved in Scouting had above average teamwork and leadership skills.  UK Chief Commissioner Wayne Bulpitt commented: 'As someone with a lot of business experience, it’s not lost on me just how much business can benefit from having staff who engage in high quality volunteering.'

He continued: 'So when I face the constant frustration of 38,000 young people who want to get involved in the physical activity Scouting provides, but who are turned away because we don’t have enough adult volunteers to meet demand, I see an opportunity. What if employers supported their staff to take part in volunteering because it was essential to their business, not simply a CSR box to tick?'

The report makes several recommendations to the Government. These include a Government award scheme and financial incentives for employers whose staff take part in volunteering; partnerships between youth voluntary organisations and professional bodies that validate qualifications in teaching and youth work; and incentives for colleges and universities to encourage students to volunteer.

Read our report and ask your MP for a meeting to discuss it. Your MP could support our national push on these initiatives and they may also be able to set up partnerships between your Group and local employers. Find out your local MP’s contact details at: theyworkforyou.com
