New International Commissioner

We are delighted to announce that Dan Wood has been appointed International Commissioner.

Dan will begin his new role from 1 September 2014 and will take over from Nigel Hailey, who has successfully led The Scout Association’s international work for the past six years.

Extensive experience

Dan is currently County Commissioner for Avon and will step down before beginning his new position. His previous roles include chairing the Operations Committee as a member of the national Board of Trustees, Assistant District Commissioner for Development and Assistant Scout Leader.

Dan has also chaired the British Youth Council and UK delegation to the European Youth Forum and has participated in a variety of international projects, delegations and working groups, most recently on human rights.

He has already contributed widely to the Association’s development nationally in areas as diverse as our review of Programme, Fundamentals, governance, branding and inclusion.

Dan said: ‘The hopes and aspirations of the young know no boundaries and their lives are increasingly intertwined. Our greatest challenge is to help them to develop as caring, co-operative, respectful and responsible global citizens who can change the world for the better.’

He continues: ‘This is a really fantastic opportunity to advance Scouting’s role, relationships and impact internationally in new and exciting ways and to play a part in the UK leadership team of a movement I’m incredibly passionate about.’

Strategic leadership

Wayne Bulpitt, UK Chief Commissioner, said: ‘The UK’s international role has been well established in recent years and I am delighted that Dan has agreed to lead the development and realisation of our international strategy, which will build on our existing international relations and operations. I am also delighted that Dan’s extensive experience of domestic Scouting and strategic leadership will make him an excellent addition to the UK leadership team.’

The primary responsibility for supporting the global elements of the balanced programme will now sit with the UK Commissioner for Programme, Craig Turpie, with support from Dan. This will enable the International Commissioner to focus on the development of our wider international impact.
