Woodturning option

Woodturning can be taken as an option for the Skills section of the Chief Scout’s Diamond and Platinum Awards and Queen’s Scout Award.

To help those young people who wish to take up woodturning as a skill, a link has been created between the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB) and the Scout Association. If anyone is wishing to take up woodturning as a skill for the above awards they will need to work with their instructor to set their own aims and objectives. As a starting point the AWGB have put together some assessment criteria for beginners.

1.1: Identify the parts of the lathe and explain their function
1.2: Correctly select work holding device such as drive centres, faceplates, and chucks etc
1.3: Follow Health & Safety instruction with respect to PPE
1.4: Follow Health & Safety instruction with respect to tools and equipment
2.1: Select correct tools for between centre work.
2.2: Rough turn, and produce simple shapes between centres.
2.3: Produce a simple project between centres e.g. a spurtle.
3.1: Select correct tools for faceplate work
3.2: Rough turn a bowl from green wood
3.3: Produce a functional bowl
