Expeditions

International expeditions provide opportunities for adventure that can be difficult to have at home. This can be because of geography as well as linguistic and cultural differences. Travelling through another country is a great way for our young people to grow in understanding, and expeditions (which don’t have to be high adventure) should be encouraged.

International expeditions are normally most suitable for Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Network Scouts. Cub and Beaver Sections may take overseas trips, however careful thought needs to be given to the appropriateness and value of the trip. Expeditions are challenging trips - for participants but also for organisers. Particular attention should be paid to safety and suitability of activities for the age group going. If you are thinking about organising an expedition it is recommended you contact your Assistant County Commissioner (International), or the Global Adviser for that Scout world region, to discuss your ideas.

Explorer Belt is an attractive proposition for older Explorer Scouts and Scout Network members, and should be promoted widely, particularly by working in partnership with your Assistant County Commissioner (Explorer Scouts) and County Scout Network Commissioner.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as well as the Queen’s Scout Award should be mentioned when promoting international expeditions.

If you are thinking of undertaking an overseas DofE Expedition then you should complete a Blue form and send it to UKHQ at least 12 weeks before your date of departure. This can be downloaded from http://www.dofe.info/go/expeditiondownloads/ and should be approved by your County DofE adviser beforehand.
