Youth council case study: South Yorkshire

District forums in South Yorkshire are made up of 8-12 members and meet 4-6 times a year.

Once the District forums have met, they choose two representatives to be part of the County youth forum, which meet four times a year with the two youth reps who are also part of the County Executive.

It starts with an idea

For the County forum meetings various ideas have been suggested and trialled:

The County fund a branded polo shirt and name badge for up to eight forum members from each District and for the two youth reps; this has proved very popular with the young people as it gives them an identity. It is also a good conversation-starter when the young people are out and about at camps and events.

There is also a youth conference once a year for all members aged 13-19. All of the work is supported by an ACC Development and the two youth reps.

Milkshake Bar

The County forum members also gather feedback from young people via their 'Milkshake Bar'. Different talking points are set up for young people to respond to and staff interacts with the young people while they are queuing at the milkshake bar.

Some examples of formats used to receive feedback are:

This has proved very popular and District and County teams are inviting the Milkshake Bar to events to gain direct feedback from their young people during the event, as well as getting them involved in the wider County discussions so that views from as many members as possible can be considered.
