Developing leadership in the Explorer Scout section

During their time in Explorer Scouts, young people get the opportunity to develop their leadership skills further. They are encouraged to take an active part in planning their Programme, for example they may be elected to sit on a planning committee.

An important part of the Explorer Programme is also the Young Leader’s Scheme, which gives Explorer Scouts a further opportunity to develop their leadership skills in Scouting. As part of completing the scheme, Explorer Scout Young Leaders undertake 10 training modules and 4 missions, which helps them to put their leadership skills into action.

Resources

There are lots of resources available to support the Young Leader's Scheme, please click here for further information.

Developing leadership skills is particularly important in the Explorer section as these skills can support young people when they are looking for further education opportunities and jobs.

The Young Leader’s Scheme is listed as an education information profile on the UCAS website.

The Get Ahead resource has also been developed to support young people to communicate what skills they have gained through Scouting on their CV or on personal statements.

The resource- Taking the Lead may be useful for Explorer Leaders running sessions on developing leadership skills with their Unit.

Information for section leaders in the Beaver, Cub and Scout sections.

A guide is also available for leaders in the Beaver, Cub and Scout sections to help leaders to understand their responsibilities and the benefits of having an effective scheme. It can also be found here.

FAQs on peer leadership in the Explorer section.

1. Why has a peer leadership system not been introduced into Explorers?

We consulted with Explorers at the YouShape 2016 event and at Gilwell 24. They were very clear that they would not want a peer leadership system in Explorers as they already develop their leadership through the Explorer Young Leader Scheme and programme planning. Therefore, the decision was made to concentrate effort looking at the support and guidance around the Young Leader's Scheme in 2017-2018.
