National Honours

People do amazing work in Scouting and beyond, and a wonderful way to recognise and reward them for this is with a nomination for a National honour. National honours are awarded on merit, for exceptional achievement or commitment to service to Britain. Recipients will generally have made life better for other people or be outstanding at what they do.

Who can nominate someone for a National honour?

Anyone may make a nomination provided it is not for themselves or a close relative.

Within Scouting, the Awards Board have a sub group called the National Honours Group, who support Commissioners with the nomination process. The National Honours Group are able to provide support for nominations via the Chief Scout (see below).

Those making a nomination should be aware that it is often helpful if the County/Regional Commissioner supports the nomination.  As a general principle, it would be unusual for a bid to be made by the Chief Scout on behalf of Headquarters if the proposed recipient does not hold the Bar to the Silver Acorn or Silver Wolf.

How do I nominate someone for a National honour?

There are three routes of nomination to the honours system:

Completing the nomination

Detailed guidance on how to write a nomination is available on the gov.uk website.

You will need to supply a detailed description explaining why you are nominating them, along with:

If making a nomination via the Chief Scout, a member of the National Honours Group will be able to assist with this process.

Further information on the general process is available at https://www.gov.uk/honours
