The variety of Scouting

1st Olney art awardThis week, Wayne experienced everyday adventure in all its guises.

One day in particular illustrated the variety that makes my role as UK Chief Commissioner so enjoyable: on Saturday I got the chance to discuss strategic issues for our Movement with the Board of Trustees, before seeing grassroots Scouting in action as I joined 4,700 young people and adults at Oxfordshire’s County camp, One World 2013.

Introducing Matt

On Wednesday evening I joined our (newish) CEO, Matt Hyde, for an evening hosted by one of our corporate partners, Cotswold Outdoor, at their flagship London store. It gave members in and around London an opportunity to meet Matt, while Matt got the chance to learn more about local Scouting and to pick up some Cotswold bargains! Feedback was great, so the team will look to organise similar opportunities elsewhere around the UK.

Catching up with colleagues

I spent a couple of days based at Gilwell Park this week, which allowed me to catch up with several staff and volunteer colleagues across many areas. I also joined the latest staff induction course, welcoming new staff to the adventure of Scouting and talking to them about our volunteers.

The Art Award – recognising success

1st Olney Scout Group have the honour of being the first Scouts to have earned the Bronze Art Award under a pilot for a new, externally-accredited scheme we have been running with The Arts Council. It was great to attend the Milton Keynes District AGM and to have the opportunity to present certificates to the 19 Scouts and Explorers who achieved the high standard required.

With all our talk of everyday adventure, it’s sometimes easy to overlook the popularity of creative arts activities and particularly the skills they teach young people, so I’ve been delighted with the feedback from the pilot. I’m happy that our members have an opportunity to gain another externally-recognised national award.

Understanding market research

On Friday we received initial feedback from independent researchers, who have been undertaking a study of people’s perceptions of Scouting. We heard a number of potential positives from this significant piece of research and I look forward to sharing the findings in future.

Trustee Board meeting

Much business was conducted over a productive day and evening. Key topics included Board effectiveness and succession planning for key roles, membership fees (which will be frozen for another year) and our consultation on the Fundamentals.

One World 2013

A prompt departure from Baden-Powell House got me to Oxfordshire in time to meet young people, leaders and helpers from across the County, who were enjoying a very successful camp. I was honoured to present a Medal for Meritorious Conduct to Stirling Stafford and to give the Silver Wolf to two exceptional leaders. Sharing in this success was the perfect end to another good week.
