Wayne shares some insights from the recent Trustee Board Meeting.

What lies behind the headlines?

At the recent Trustee Board Meeting, we presented an analysis of our annual census along with an overview of our various work plans underpinning the strategic objectives; I thought I would share some highlights.

News that Scouting added a further 10,000 members in 2012, along with support from The Duchess of Cambridge, led to headlines proclaiming our popularity; the Telegraph said that we were once again cool.

But what lies behind the headlines?

Some particular areas of note from our presentation included:

  • Growth in total membership of 1.8%, with adults growing more than young people
  • The continued success of the Young Leader Scheme
  • An increase in the number of leaders aged 18-25
  • Continued increase in our 'share of market': 3% of all young people aged 6-24 are members and as high as 9% of Cub Scout age
  • 85% of groups now have a GSL, up from 75% in 2008
  • Small increase in the average size of sections

What are we doing to support this?

We have a number of initiatives underway, with recognition of the impact of many showing through the census. I regularly write and talk about these, but here's a reminder of some:

  • Updating of the youth programme and development of a new initiative for 18-25 year-olds
  • Making life easier through a new membership system and website
  • Improving the adult training experience
  • Promoting volunteering in many forms – flexibility, young adults, employer supported etc
  • Improved support for Executive Committee and supporters
  • Developing and promoting international opportunities
  • Expanding leadership opportunities for young people
  • Improving local media awareness through more support for local media managers
  • In addition we have major strategy groups underway to achieve our ambitious plans for inclusion, growth and volunteer development

My week

I seem to have spent much of the past week with Matt Hyde. We were in Geneva on Monday to meet WOSM, at Buckingham Palace on Thursday for the Coronation Celebrations, catching up with Bear Grylls on Friday and at the Operations Conference (annual gathering of key HQ staff and volunteers) on Saturday, closing the day with the meeting of that committee - phew!
