Helping to solve the greatest source of complaints I receive

Last Monday we were lucky enough to spend the afternoon with Dawud Wharnsby (www.wharnsby.com) to discuss ways in which he could support Scouting worldwide. Darwud is an internationally renowned composer and artist who has recorded over 15 albums. In addition, due to the popularity of his educational recordings for children, he frequently visits schools worldwide and through his music and unique discussion promotes tolerance, diversity and social cohesion. Darwud had originally been approached by Scouts in Bristol who were impressed by his enthusiasm and so forwarded his details to me. Look out for further developments.

Another of the highlights of last week was an opportunity for Julie and I to try on samples of different types of trousers which Scout Shops have been trialling! Now I know from my mail and various conversations that for many ladies in particular the present uniform is a great source of discomfort (!) not to mention complaint and so I do not underestimate the importance of the exercise we have been undertaking. Julie is taking the samples to her Leaders meeting this evening to seek further views and I am aware that Scout Shops have been doing likewise with a number of focus groups across the UK (my disclaimer). From what I have seen so far I think many more of you will be pleased rather than disappointed in the near future.

Last weekend also saw the quarterly meeting of the Board of Trustees and the agenda included the agreement of business objectives for next year (the action plans that dictate the work undertaken at Headquarters in support of local Scouting and further development nationally and internationally) and consideration of the Vision 2018 following the National Conference earlier in October. A summary of the other items discussed will be posted on www.scouts.org.uk/committee shortly.

Thursday also saw an early morning conference call with senior colleagues involved in our international work to discuss a number of items emanating from recent international meetings of staff and volunteers, consultation documents that have been issued by the World Organisation regarding the constitution and general management of the world organisation and to evaluate whether or not we wish to bid for any international events over the next few years.

Looking forward to joining Kent’s Chief Scout Award recipients this Saturday for their presentation evening - and some much smoother flights than I seemed to have had over the past 2 weeks!
