Chief Commissioner's blog| Developing good leadership

The quality of leadership and management within Scouting is a key priority, so joining a pilot course in Hampshire was a chance for Wayne to explore the issue and catch up with GSLs and DCs.

Pilot course

The adult training team in Hampshire has developed a pilot training course for volunteer managers, GSLs and DCs, which successfully pulls together management training principles and techniques in a Scouting context; with typical issues and challenges that these key roles have to deal with.

When speaking with the participants on the course, it was clear that the training team had struck a great balance as the compliments were numerous.

Chatting to the participants again over dinner was also an opportunity to discuss a wide range of topics and issues at the forefront of their minds.

Reflecting our local communities

One of the themes that cropped up in each of the tables was how we make Scouting more inclusive and persuade leaders to think differently.  Coincidentally, this was also a theme of my meeting on Sunday when I chaired a meeting with representatives of the National Scout Faith Fellowships.

Supporting faith elements of our Programme

We presently have five faith groups, covering Methodist, Catholic, URC, Muslim and Anglican communities. Their roles are primarily two-fold: to support leaders in delivering faith aspects of the balanced programme and supporting the development of Scouting within their communities.

The topics were again varied and as diverse as promoting the availability of meeting facilities, material to support the appointment process post introduction of the alternative Promise, and development opportunities.

Can you help?

It would be great if we could have similar groups for the other key faiths – if this is something you could help with please do contact me.
