It’s been very much a week of meetings for Wayne, covering such matters as World Scouting, market research and impact assessments, and the launch of a new volunteering campaign.

European Scouting

Members of the European Scout Committee were recently at Gilwell for a conference workshop and we took advantage of the situation. We met with recently appointed Chair and Vice-Chair, Andrea Demarmels and Christos Hatzidiamandis, along with Regional Director, David McKee, to discuss areas of mutual interest. We talked about our support of regional initiatives/work plans and World Scouting re-location and other global issues around fees and voting rights.

Understanding the landscape and our impact

Liam Burns, Head of Public Affairs and I met with a team of market researchers and consultants from NatCen (including our former Director of MarComms, John Palmer) to understand the wide range of services and support they may be able to help us with as we continue to evaluate our impact and increase our reach across all communities.

Our commercial activity

A workshop at BP House saw 20 staff and volunteers from across our commercial activities (Scout Shops Ltd, Unity (Scout Insurance Services), Commercial Partnerships, Fundraising etc) identify how best we can support members while contributing to the net income of the Movement, thereby further reducing our reliance on the membership fee. Very much work in progress...

Step Up To Serve

This week saw the launch of the Step Up To Serve initiative (I’ve written about this before in its previous guise of Youth Social Action) by HRH Prince Charles, accompanied by the leaders of the three main political parties who gathered to support the launch.

Scouting’s behind-the-scenes work on this, which helped promote the initiative’s launch, provides further evidence that Scouting is always at the forefront of social action in the UK.
