Chief Commissioner's blog| It's all about teamwork

‘Alone we do so little; together we can do so much.’ Wayne was reminded of author, Helen Keller’s words at a recent meeting...

The usual mix

Our latest team meeting included the usual mix of sharing good practice, tips and ideas and the flow of information from respective team meetings. We also welcomed Craig Turpie to his first meeting as UK Commissioner for Programme.

Know and understand

We have made significant progress in analysing data and have now provided each District Commissioner with an information pack comparing membership in the District to the local community, retention between ages, demographics and so much more.  The sole purpose is to allow tailored development plans to be drawn and resources to be targeted more effectively.

This project itself is a great example of teamwork and has been undertaken by a team of volunteer analysts in their spare time for which we are very grateful.

Blindingly obvious

We also identified the blindingly obvious: that continued growth and success is a consequence of everything else. Obvious yes, but all too often we can get side-tracked by the latest buzz words or strategic plans.  Take a look at my previous Keys to success blog for some thoughts on what ‘everything else’ might mean.

The key to continued growth is of course the quality of the programme offered to young people. We received an update on the revisions being introduced next spring and in particular the changes to Module 12 of the adult training programmes to support this. Feedback was very good, so we are evaluating the practicality of delivering this to all section and unit leaders later this year.

Another issue highlighted was the distraction and significant demotivating impact of the breakdown of personalities and of incidents in a particular Group or District.  We reviewed the ongoing work to alleviate these from leadership and management work (toolkits and training managers, support for effective reviews and resolving disputes). In some ways these might be expected in an organisation of our size but just think how much better things could be if we reduced these.

Quality of program is vital but it must run hand in hand with quality and availaibility of leaders in the sections . I feel more attention needs to be focused on scouting skills training within the woodbadge program and as part of Continuing development.
