Great Value

Two pieces of research struck me in recent weeks; combined they add yet another string to our bow when arguing the importance of Scouting and why local partners such as schools and local authorities should be helping us.

The Sutton Trust recently reported that ‘extra-curricular inequalities’ extolled the benefits of extracurricular activities, including Scouting. The report noted that it was children from wealthier families that gained a ‘substantial benefit’, with less affluent families unable to give their children similar opportunities for after-school activities.

After this, Mathsdoctor.com confirmed that Scouting and Guiding provide the best value for money of all the after-school clubs they surveyed.

When combined this is pretty powerful stuff when we are promoting and sustaining Scouting in our local communities. Let’s make the most of them.

Scouting Ireland

We were delighted to celebrate our partnership with Scouting Ireland during Gilwell Reunion by presenting Chief Scout Michael-John Shinnick with a Chief Scout Personal Award. We also presented Scouting Ireland with a unique collection from our archives, which functioned as a suitable reminder of Ireland’s brilliant contribution to the 1957 Jamboree.

Between Ireland and the UK we have 15,000 members based in Northern Ireland who have been working together since the 1970s, when peace and reconciliation were still distant ambitions and such joint working was not without its risks. We will continue working together in many joint initiatives, making a real difference in our communities.

It was nice to be able to celebrate such success and continue work on developing opportunities for young people.
