Chief Commissioner's Blog |Better Prepared - be surprised

With the launch of Better Prepared, Wayne explores its importance to the future of young people and our communities and where it sits in our Scouting for All plans.

Myth busting

‘Be surprised’ is a phrase I often use when talking to people about Scouting and bursting many of the myths and false perceptions people still have.

Many are surprised the Scouting is already present in 70 of the poorest 100 wards in the UK. But because we know that Scouting changes the lives of young people and is also beneficial for the communities we live in too, we are not satisfied with this. This is why our plans to be present and sustainable in the poorest 200 communities across the UK are so important. We can be quietly confident, however, that through many projects over the past few years we have a successful and proven model to achieve this, which is increasingly recognised by others.

This success is evidenced by the financial support received (Youth United’s single largest grant) and discussions we are having with other potential supporters, including those who joined us at the Better Prepared launch at Parliament.

Check out our video below to see how Scouting is changing the lives of Ben and Sonny and their mums, Florita and Tracie.

Not about growth

Better Prepared is more about being inclusive and reflecting our communities than it is about growing Scouting; ensuring all young people, irrespective of their background have an opportunity to benefit from Scouting’s life-changing opportunities.

Find out more about Better Prepared and read about what you can do in your own areas to develop Scouting.

Not forgetting the practical things

As with all step-change initiatives we have announced recently, we haven’t lost sight of the importance of direct local support in everything we do.

A good quality youth programme remains fundamental; to learn what the Programme Team are doing to help you, you can listen to a recent interview with Craig Turpie, UK Commissioner for Programme on Scout Radio.
