Chief Commissioner's Blog | Founder's Day

Wayne looks forward to a very special day in Scouting…

A day to remember

While unknown at the time of course, the birth of one Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell on 22 February 1857 was to have a tremendous impact on the lives of millions of young people across the world. It’s on this date we celebrate Founder’s Day, which marks the birth of both Baden-Powell and his wife, Olave Baden-Powell, who gave us Scouting and Guiding respectively.

Timeless values

As we gather this weekend to celebrate their lives, it’s worth reflecting on the lasting impact Scouting and Guiding continue to have on the lives of young people, young adults and volunteers across the globe. It’s also amazing to think how the views expressed through publications such as Scouting for Boys, as long ago as 1908 when first published, continue to have significance today, despite the language of a very different era.

Ironically, while we talk about being youth shaped and having community impact with such passion today, B-P founded Scouting on the premise of young people getting together and setting up patrols of Scouts in each other’s front rooms. Doing a good deed, and helping others have also been at the very core of our programmes and activities since the very beginning, along with the development of teamwork and leadership skills.

Moving with the times

It is true that we are prospering today because we have moved with the times and have promoted our brand of everyday adventure to attract more young people and adults in growing numbers.

But it is a tribute to the vision of our Founders, however, that while we have evolved and grown, our core values and principals haven’t really changed in 107 years. It’s a thought worth considering this weekend as we celebrate their lives.
