Two Scouts, two different lives, same spirit

Two sad occasions for me this week with the news on Monday that Stephen Young had died tragically whilst on a climbing holiday in the Cairngorms with family and friends and today I attended a memorial service for Air Commodore Charles Widdows who died aged 100 having commanded a night fighter squadron during the Battle of Britain amongst many more heroic acts.

Two very different lives, in different generations, but both had the same passion for Scouting and were an inspiration to those whose lives they touched.

Stephen was an Assistant Scout Leader at Ightham and, at the age of 18, the youngest trustee of Kent Scouts. Having been a Scout since the age of 6, he became well known in 2007 for spending an entire year sleeping in a tent and raising funds for charity. Despite his young age, he had already made a significant impact on those around him and was clearly a great example of what can be achieved by one so young.

In very different circumstances, Charles Widdows by comparison had enjoyed a very long life, so much of which had also been dedicated to helping other people and especially Scouting.

Two men from very different generations; both making a significant impact on others in their lives, and both sharing a common interest and passion for Scouting. Both will be sadly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends at this difficult time.
