Adventurous activity permit scheme - approved assessors (FS120104)

This page provides a guide to those wishing to become an assessor to assess applicants for adventurous activity permits.  More detailed information on the scheme, for applicants, responsible Commissioners, and for each activity can be found in separate guidance.

The permit scheme

The adventurous activity permit scheme is a way of ensuring that an applicant has the skills and experience to lead an adventurous activity for a group of young people in Scouting. It is designed to be flexible, allowing each permit to be tailored based on the applicant’s skills, experience and requirements.

There are two types of assessor. They are:

1  County Assessors – Appointed by Counties to be assessors for specific activities.

2  External assessors – Qualified individuals external to Scouting who are experienced in carrying out assessments when no County Assessors are available. This is not a Scouting appointment and will generally be used for a one off assessment. Due to external assessors not being required to do any internal training or validation of their assessment skills, they are required to hold national governing body qualifications that include assessing training. Details of the level of qualification they are required to hold can be found in the external assessor qualification table.

When you use an external assessor you should ensure they see the guidance for external assessors and also the relevant assessment checklist that they will be assessing you against.
