Paintball as a Scout activity

A consultation with our members has resulted in an overwhelming wish to open up access to paintballing as an activity within Scouting.

Paintball will be allowed as an activity within Scouting from January 2014 if provided by operator members of the UK Paintball Association, the UK Paintball Sports Federation or an equivalent body, and parental permission for under 18s.

Safe Scouting

Members were asked to share their views about the activity and provide considered reasons for and against a change to the governance of safe activities in Scouting; 83% of those asked about paintballing said that it should be allowed as a Scout activity.

The feedback revealed that with appropriate risk management measures, paintballing was considered no riskier than activities already available. All Scout activities are optional and members can now make their own personal choice whether to take part or not.

Managing risks

As with all Scout activities, risk management is required to effectively deliver access to a wide range of safe activities. During the last sixteen years since this activity was banned in Scouting, industry standards have been introduced including insurance cover, age restrictions and use of personal protective equipment required.

Paintball guns (and Nerf guns, laser guns, water pistols, Airsoft guns etc) are not classed as firearms so the existing Scout activity rule banning shooting at human targets with firearms is still in operation.
