Birthday badge winners announced

Thirteen celebrities have been awarded Scout badges today, as Scouting celebrates its 106th birthday.

Over half a million Scouts from across the UK had the chance to vote for public figures that have inspired young people and contributed to society.

A-list winners

The high-profile names on the annual Scout Birthday Honours List include Olympic and Paralympic heroes Sir Bradley Wiggins, Jessica Ennis-Hill and David Weir, Director Danny Boyle, singer Jessie J, TV presenter Graham Norton and teenage author Beth Reekles.

BAFTA-winning TV presenter Graham Norton was awarded the Communicator badge. He spoke about how much he enjoyed Scouting: 'I liked the outdoor things like orienteering. Because I was a Scout in Ireland we got to visit some really nice places. You get a lot more out of the experience as a Scout.'

Author Beth Reekles won a major book deal after posting her work online. On receiving the Writer badge today, she offered her tips for budding Scout authors: 'Write a lot and read a lot, that's what I did. They say practice makes perfect, so the more you write the better you get at it.'

Inspiration to young people

Chief Scout Bear Grylls congratulated the Birthday Badge winners: 'Scouting is proud to recognise those who have inspired young people during the last twelve months. Those receiving these awards join the thousands of ordinary adults across the UK who inspire young people in their leadership roles. I am super-proud of all of them.'

With over 35,000 young people waiting to join Scouting, we’re always looking for adult volunteers to inspire young people with everyday adventure. Search for your nearest Group and find out how you can get involved.
