New senior volunteer team for Welsh Scouts

Jim and GarethTwo new senior volunteer Scouting managers have been appointed for Scouts Wales.

Gareth Watson, currently Area Commissioner for Glamorgan West and Jim Hopkins, the Area Commissioner for Ceredigion will share the Chief Commissioner role, taking over from Jill Gloster after a successful seven-year tenure.

Flexible volunteering in action

The duo’s role sharing epitomises The Scout Association’s flexible approach to volunteering.

UK Chief Commissioner Wayne Bulpitt commented: ‘I am delighted to welcome Gareth and Jim in this role share as they join the UK team to lead Scouting in Wales. I'm confident that this dynamic pair will build on the sterling efforts of their predecessor, Jill Gloster. Huge thanks to Jill for a very successful seven years in the post, which saw good growth in Wales.’

At 32, and 31 respectively, Gareth and Jim are the two youngest appointments to the senior volunteer management team of Scouting in the UK.

Jim Hopkins said: ‘I am excited to be taking on the new challenge of Chief Commissioner jointly with Gareth. Adult volunteers are an essential component in Scouting, helping us to keep up with demand from young people and with the numbers currently waiting to join we need more adults across Wales. Our volunteers work directly with young people, manage other volunteers and provide administrative support. We adapt roles to suit modern work and family commitments, as Gareth and I are demonstrating.’

Gareth Watson added: ‘I’m really excited to be sharing the leadership in Wales with Jim. Scouting here is growing faster than ever. Even with our young families and demanding careers, Scouting offers us the flexibility to take on the task of being the youngest senior volunteer management team in the whole UK.’

We wish them the best of luck in their new roles.
