Peer Leadership in Cub Scouts

A Cub Pack is usually organised into small groups called Sixes, each headed up by an older Cub called a Sixer, and often with a Seconder as well. Sixes can be used in a number of ways to facilitate the organisation of the Cub Scout Pack.

Support resources
A guide to peer leadership in Cub Scouts is available for leaders to give some top tips on using Sixers in the Pack. This can be found here.

A top tips leaflet is available for Sixers to help them learn the ropes and congratulate them on becoming a Sixer will also be available from Monday 6th March 2017. These guides will be sent directly to leaders with their Sixer stripes packs.

From March 2017, the Sixer and Seconder badge stripes in Cubs will become red. For more information on the colour change, please see the FAQs below.

Have a question about peer leadership in Cubs?
These FAQs have been developed to answer the most common queries.

1. Why has the colour of the Sixer and Seconder stripes changed?
The idea to have different colour badge stripes to show leadership progression through the sections came out of Youshape 2016.
Following this, consultation has taken place at a number of events with adult volunteers and Cubs.
As a result of the consultation, the colour of the Sixer and Seconder stripes in Cubs will be red and badge stripes will be introduced into Beavers to show progression in leadership through sections. The blue badge stripes remain the same for Scouts.

2. Will I lose money now the Sixer and Seconder stripes are red?
The cost to Cub Packs was considered during the consultation and development of these resources.
It was decided that the badge stripes for Scouts- Patrol Leaders, Assistant Leaders and Senior Patrol Leaders will remain the same. This allows us to show progression, whilst minimising cost. Therefore, blue badge stripes can be used by the Scout section in the group instead. The red badges will cost the same as the blue badges and therefore Cub Packs should not be significantly impacted from the change.

3. What is the pack size for Sixer badge stripes and leaflets?
From Monday 6th March 2017, when Badge Secretaries order the Sixer badge stripes, they will be able to order packs of 10. These will be distributed along with packs of 10 guidance leaflets for Sixers. The leaflets are free of charge.
Badge Secretaries requiring just the leaflets will be able to order these individually for a limited time.
