Supporting and approving Awards for Good Service

The information on this page is aimed at Commissioners and Award’s Advisory Groups.

There are a number of awards for Good Service, on this page we cover:

Good Service Awards and the criteria for nomination

To be awarded a Good Service Award the nominee must meet the following criteria, which applies to all awards:

Chief Scout’s Commendation for Good Service
The nominee should have a minimum of five years good service.

Award for Merit
The nominee should have a minimum of 12 years (exceptionally 10 years) outstanding service.

Bar to the Award for Merit
The nominee must have been awarded The Award for Merit and completed five further years of outstanding service.

Silver Acorn
The nominee should have a minimum of 20 years of specially distinguished service.

Bar to the Silver Acorn
The nominee must have been awarded The Silver Acorn and completed five further years of specially distinguished service.

Silver Wolf
For service of the most exceptional nature, it is not normally considered before The Silver Acorn has been presented.

As part of the decision making/nominating process you must ensure that the criteria above is adhered to. This is an important part in ensuring that awards presented across UK Scouting are of equal merit and achievement.

Part of the role of the National Awards Advisory Group is to undertake moderation of the Awards, spot checks will be taken and feedback and support will be provided to Districts/Counties/Areas and Regions (Scot) to ensure the minimum criteria is met.

  • Processing an award application locally

The decision making for the Awards (as set out above) will rest with the Commissioner. To support them in their decision making Commissioners are encouraged (but not required) to set up a local Award Advisory Group.

Commissioners can manage Awards in their areas in different ways, some wish to completely devolve the decision making, while others wish to take personal responsibility for them. This approach gives Commissioners the flexibility to manage Awards in the way that works best for their area.

When processing an award for Good Service it is important to consider the following -
    • Has the nominee met the required criteria (as set out above)?
    • Do you have enough supporting evidence to show that the individual has given good/distinguished/exceptional service for the required number of years for the award?
The supporting evidence can come in a number of ways the most common way is to collect this information on the Award nomination forms. The forms can be found on the Nominating for Good Service Award page.

Commissioners or local Awards Advisory Groups may wish to set up their own local nomination processes or adapt the nomination forms for local use.

Below are the links to the word versions of the nomination forms if required.

Supporting applications which need to go to the next level for approval

Anyone can nominate an adult member or associate member for a Good Service Award, as such you may receive applications for Awards which need checking, additional information added and then passing on to the next level (or the one above).

It may be that the individual being nominated is not eligible for a Good Service Award, it may be worth considering the Commissioner Commendation or an application for the Chief Scout’s Personal Award may be more appropriate.

Awards which require an application to be submitted to National HQ for a decision will go through the following process:

    Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4 Stage 5 Stage 6
Submit Award application Suitability Check undertaken by HQ Check to ensure the Award has not already been issued Decision made by the National Awards Advisory Group Issue Award for presentation Upload Award to Compass 60 days after issue

All completed Award applications for The Silver Acorn, Bar to the Silver Acorn or Silver Wolf should be submitted by email to awards@scouts.org.uk.
