Managers and Supporters Training

At the end of January 2017, a new training provision for Managers and Supporters in Scouting was introduced and is being rolled out in phases; in different parts of the UK.

What does the scheme look like in practice?

The previous Manager/ Supporter modules are being replaced with more up to date resources, to better support our volunteers in these critical roles. The new training scheme will consist of:

Managers and Supporters Training

From the end of January 2017, all new Manager and Supporter appointments will be required to complete the new training scheme.

If a Manager or Supporter is in the middle of completing training for their Wood Badge when the new scheme comes into effect at end of January 2017 they have a choice:

  1. They can continue to complete their training under the previous training scheme using the old modules’ validation criteria. If they choose to do this they must complete all their training before end of June 2017 after which the old scheme can no longer be used to complete the Wood Badge.
  2. They can move to the new training scheme to complete their Wood Badge using the new validation criteria. Prior learning will be taken into consideration and training completed under the old scheme can be used to validate certain criteria as part of the new scheme (see FAQs below).

From the end of June 2017, all volunteers in Manager or Supporter roles must complete the validation criteria under the new Managers and Supporters Training in order to gain their Wood Badge. Modules completed under the previous training scheme for Managers and Supporters can be used to validate certain criteria as part of the new scheme (see FAQs below).

External Recognition

The Scout Association’s Managers and Supporters Training has been recognised as a Development Programme with the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). ILM recognition is the benchmark of high quality, bespoke in-house leadership and management training.

What does the new scheme look like in practice?
Learners holding a Manager or Supporter appointment can register for the Development Programme in order to receive access to a range of ILM resources and learning opportunities designed to inspire and motivate. All registered learners are eligible for free studying membership of the Institute of Leadership & Management for the duration of the programme or 12 months (whichever is longer). On completion of their programme, learners receive a certificate from ILM.

The Development Programme has no formal assessment requirement by the ILM, which means that there is no extra work for learners. The ILM recognises the quality of the programme content, aims, objectives and learning outcomes. This means that all the learners have to do is complete their Wood Badge in their role as a Manager or Supporter.

Previous Training Resources for Managers and Supporters - pre-2017

There is a transition period between end of January 2017 and end of June 2017 whereby some learners will still be undertaking the previous modules for Managers and Supporters and others will be starting on the new Managers and Supporters Training.

For those learners still undertaking the previous modules these resources can be found below:

Learners who are still undertaking these modules will need to ensure that they have completed these before the end of June 2017. After this point, all learners will need to complete the Managers and Supporters Training.
