Royal Navy recognition

Sea Scout Groups and Explorer Sea Scout Units may apply to become RN recognised, under an agreement between the Scouts and the Royal Navy.

The scheme is administered by the Cadets and Youth (CY) team at COMCORE (Commander Core Naval Training and Recruitment). Groups or Units who apply for RN recognition will have an initial review by a Reviewing Officer.

If a partnership agreement is in place between the Group and the Unit, they may apply together for joint recognition.

Details about the standards required to achieve recognition can be found in factsheet Royal Navy Recognition Scheme (FS120628) (PDF)

There are currently only a total of 103 places allocated to the scheme but there is scope to expand at a modest rate.  If the scheme is full, your Group or Unit can be added to a waiting list.

Applying for recognition

Groups and/or Units interested in applying to the scheme, should email sea.scouts@scouts.org.uk who can advise if there are spaces available.

When the Group  and/or Unit feel that they have reached the standard required, should seek the approval of their District Commissioner and then apply using the application form.

COMCORE will then arrange for a Reviewing Officer to carry out an initial review. If the Group and/or Unit meets the required standard, it will be granted recognition.

It recognition is not granted,  the Group or Unit will be given guidance on what actions it needs to take to reach the required standard within an agreed timescale, so that a further review can be arranged.

The District Commissioner should be informed of the date of the review, so that they may be present. The County/Area Commissioner and the UK Specialist Adviser for Sea Scouts should also be informed, as they also may wish to be present. Other appropriate members of the County/Area/Regional team, such as the ACC/AAC (Scouts / Explorer Scouts) may also attend.

RN recognised Groups/Units will have a review every two years, to assess whether they have maintained standards and are worthy of retaining their recognition.

The COMCORE CY Team Leader, Royal Navy and the Member Support Department at UKHQ approve initial and annual retention of RN recognition.

Public relations

This scheme provides a considerable public relations opportunity to both the Scouts and the Royal Navy. Groups/Units should make every effort to get local press coverage by providing a press release and photographic opportunity at inspections.
